Welcome to the fall season

Welcome to the fall season, which kicks off officially on September 21st. There are also several important markers for September, including National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. It’s also Mental Health Awareness Month and National Suicide Awareness Month.

As we come around the corner to fall, we are extremely aware that we might have twin viruses coming at us this season as the regular flu will be making its mark while we are still dealing with Covid 19. Many of the symptoms appear similar and we encourage everyone to get a regular flu vaccine, soon.
During this time, we continue to face uncertainty for the children returning back to school, some in-person, some virtually, making it difficult for both clients and staff at First Step Home. Stressors are affecting women more deeply this fall, as things
like school openings, domestic violence upticks and mental health issues increasing during the pandemic create chaos in women’s lives. All the while addiction is on the rise. We have seen more women coming into First Step Home are arriving pregnant and/or with children in tow. Also, many of the women are facing significant mental health issues as well as substance use disorder.

We are happy to welcome these women into our campus and residential treatment at First Step Home, though our concerns for their well-being has risen as well. We are strong, committed and dedicated to helping women and children during this challenging time in our history.

Sincerely,
Margo Spence

First Step Home

Founded in 1993, First Step Home is a treatment center located in Walnut Hills, a suburb of Cincinnati. Established as a women’s only facility, First Step Home is the only addiction treatment center in Cincinnati allowing children, up to the age of 12, to live with their mother’s while they are in treatment. First Step Home provides an entire continuum of care to women with addiction. Our staff work to assist women in rebuilding their families as they break the cycle of drug and alcohol addiction.

Who is First Step Home?

Welcome to First Step Home, where we focus again on the health and safety of all the clients, children and staff – all of whom are working so hard at this time.

We have 100 women 30 children and 48 staff who are following federal, state and local guidelines to keep Covid 19 at bay.

We are here on campus, on a 24/7 basis, working with the suggestions and guidance with our medical director, psychiatric nurse and RN’s to keep everyone healthy while we work to address substance use disorder and mental health issues with our clients.

Baby and Teddy

Whether it's a pack of diapers, gently-used clothing, toys or books, pots and pans, bedding, or simply, your time. It will be greatly appreciated.  Some of women and children come to us with little more than the clothes on their backs.  Your generosity will give them an opportunity at a new life while remaining together as a family.
